I think the phrase is pretty common in America (being that we have dollars in circulation and all, and the UK does not, it stands to reason that it wouldn't be terribly popular in the UK). My mother used to use it several times a year. Too many times, we didn't have enough time, didn't have enough money . . . . But it's not usually used literally. I think it was usually apologies that came a day late and a dollar short . . . . Micki
