I don’t remember an Asimov story like that; however, I do remember a Fred Saberhagen story with that theme (one of the Berzerker stories), … checking … “ The Annihilation of Angkor Apeiron” (Feb 1975 issue of _Galaxy_, also collected in _The Ultimate Enemy_).
