To be fair, it's very difficult to select for one trait without selecting
against others.  Particularly scent, as so many things are involved in its
production.  A change in the expression of one little enzyme can cause an
entire biological process to come crashing down.

Many old roses are actually quite hardy and disease-resistant.  Their
primary 'problem' is that they don't bloom for very long.  Breeders were
very interested in roses that kept blooming month after month - even though
that's a major drain on the plants.  So between the drain and compromises
accepted in the breeding, more modern roses became stress-intolerant and
weak.
