In SF, we need to explore the various social pressures deciding what kind(s) of family relationships are acceptable.
In general, society likes what optimizes the success of the next generation - with “society” weighted towards the powerful. Sometimes that means having a big population.
Of course, society changes slowly, so when smaller populations are more practical, it can take a while to accept smaller families.
Barrayar wanted more population growth than Beta did - and it didn’t have the concentrated resources for raising kids communally.
Athos wanted children, but the difficulties in bearing and raising children created a different set of mores deciding who gets to get married and be fathers.
