Children are generally expected to obey people bigger and stronger than
them or face punishment. Why wouldn't a child go along with DARTH VADER if
confronted with him? Dude's scary. (I rather expect most people would
insist that the child is supposed to do the "right thing" AND insist that
the child is supposed to obey them. But then most people have less
self-awareness than potatoes.)
Actually, that's a good point to return to the OP: if someone is faced
with the choice of doing something 'evil' or dying, when is it forgivable
to go along and when is it honorable to choose death?
