Subtle, but mentioned.  Sometimes you had to know the older English
words -- e.g., at the Battle of Helms' Deep the Riders lament how
Saruman's hordes are burning tilth and byre as they come.  The
Pelennor Fields near Minas Tirith are briefly described; the
"great slave-worked fields" around Lake Nurnen in southern Mordor
get a passing mention.

Tolkien is aware of these issues; he just doesn't make a point of
