There's been extensive back-and-forth about who discovered what, what uses they put it to, etc. 

Pithy as ever, Tony Z. summed it up, "Newton and Galileo were standing on the shoulders of a lot of people who had worked out and clarified stuff about motion and related things."

Not surprisingly, I know a song about that. It's by Larry Niven's nephew, Tim Griffin. It, and all the other music his educational foundation puts out, is free.
