It's interesting to see how much of an impact Lily had on Barr's life,
before he even met her properly.

Just knowing she existed gave him a whole different view of the world,
of children with mixed parentage, of farmers, of himself. And a whole
new view about how to treat women.

For twelve years he kept vigil, worried, thought about Lily... so different
from the flibbertigibbet identity they'd given him in camp.

And even more; his family thought it likely that he'd find a nice girl up
in Luthlia. Barr notes that most of the boys he grew up with are married
and living in different camps. Barr comes back home - deep down he
couldn't commit to anyone so far from Lily. (And later, when he's finally
string-bound, it seems that his wife has agreed to stay in his camp, so
that he's still near Lily.)

That single, unexpected, unplanned event shaped his life. And made
him grow up into a pretty good man.
