First: the bugs don't collect "radiation".  They collect radioactive
isotopes that emit radiation.

It's certainly possible that the radioactive material powers the glow,
one way or another.  But it's not strictly necessary.  Enrique had
already got the pathways for "normal" bioluminescence nailed down,
and it's possible that the simple fact of the bug accumulating damage
from its radioactive load would trigger the glowing...  something
about the dying cells releasing breakdown products could trigger the
bioluminescence.
