As Jonathan Spencer says, there's a fourth path: the 'bugs' are
programmed (via gene and protein 'circuits', cf _Wetware_ by Dennis
Bray) to glow more as they accumulate more of the desired elements,
without metabolizing them, being 'powered' by them, or damaged by them.
It's not that hard to design IF X THEN Y chains now, let alone 1000
years from now.
