It's a fairly common pattern in English orthography: "baseball" and 
"typewriter", to name two, have progressed from two words, to a 
hyphenated word, to a single word. (Of course, "e-book" and its 
relatives never had the two-word phase. And yes, consarn it, I still put 
the hyphen into the whole e-lot of them!)
