The repeated injunctions against mixing incompatible things - fabrics with
two or more materials, growing two or more grains in the same field,
plowing with different types of animals - are widely considered to be
metaphorically emphasizing the importance of not marrying non-Jews or
adopting foreign traditions.

They certainly weren't established for practical reasons, as many of the
examples are mainstays of modern life.
