Arecibo is only one of  two large diameter radio telescopes (305 meters).
The other one is in (of course) China. As a scientific investment it's the
cheapest in which thousands of scientists and graduates are dependent on,
who now will be forced to use more expensive to access radio telescopes or
go through the Chinese political gauntlet to use its big dish. Sadly to
say, this is just another indication of the erosion of pure science in the
United States.
