Women were willing to buy, wear, and maintain clothing that's delicate and
needs careful handling.  And so women's clothing is delicate and needs
careful handling.

Men haven't generally been involved with the kinds of labor that require
coarse, strong clothing that can get filthy for... generations.   Although
obviously there are those sorts of jobs, the middle class has been around
for a while.  (Rapidly shrinking now... but that's an economics tangent for
another day.)

That cartoonist has the right idea.
