And not merely over doctrine.  The riots between the fans of the Blue and
Green chariot racing teams in Byzantium comes to mind.  Eventually the
Emperor gave orders for the exits to the coliseum to be sealed and soldiers
to massacre everyone fighting inside... estimated at 50,000 people, a
significant portion of the total population of the city.

Ancient Rome was beyond our concepts of superstitious, believing that
everything had a god and every god must be properly honored.  There were
even rituals to forgotten gods that no one dared to stop.  Society was
rigidly hierarchical, and violating custom was a quick way to die.
