China may be on their way to forced procreation. The one child policy has changed to a two child policy with three all. However, the girl shortage (as bad or worse than the Vor) has made the demographics weird.
Ten men and a thousand women can give you a thousand babies in a year. A thousand men fighting over ten women may not get you any.

I also remember reading that rebuttal. And at the time I had read it it
was much more convincing than today.

These days we have far more examples of countries reducing their
population growth a generation after achieving prosperity (as children
become a cost instead of an essential farm implement).
