You mean the act kills the assassin-sorcerer? No, it doesn't; otherwise
Alixtra would have been dead several times over. The sorcerer in Penric's
Mission who targets Penric knows perfectly well he isn't risking his own
life. Presumably he wouldn't be willing to do that, though he's willing to
sacrifice his demon.

What happens is that a human death creates an opening for the gods to reach
through and grab the *demon.*

You may be confusing the act of assassination-by-demon with death magic,
which is a special case -- and which *does* (usually) involve the death of
the caster as well as their target. The Bastard's death demon has two soul
buckets and needs to fill them both.
