It does not say why they think it should be spoken like that, nor can I see how anyone can *know*.
Gwynne: There's various cues that give them the idea. There's a lot of
help from poetry; seeing which words are put together as rhyming, often
they don't rhyme now but they obviously did at that time. Some other
jokes and word play, that depends on words which sound alike, tells us
that those words did sound alike at that time.
