The details are everything:  they're asked to view a video in which two
groups of people in differently-colored uniforms are superimposed on each
other, and asked to count the number of times one group bounced the
basketball.  Partly through, a person dressed in a gorilla costume walks by.

When people are eliminating irrelevant stimuli in order to concentrate on
salient features, they'll ignore all sorts of things, even things that they
might consider noteworthy under other circumstances.
