Sensible system.

In the UK, it's all online now; a cop can enter the VRM¹ into a data
terminal, and it can tell instantly if the vehicle is insured, taxed,
and has had its MOT², where required.

And indeed, any third party can get two of those; Tax and MOT status,
from a simple website.

¹Vehicle Registration Mark, the official name for what's usually
referred to as the registration or number plate.
²Ministry Of Transport test - annual mandatory safety and emissions
inspection from year three.
