For all that having Fiametta drink the wine shows that he's willing to
stake the person whose life he values most, it's still possible something
could have gone wrong.  It would be more appropriate, although arguably
less convincing, to have drunk the wine himself.

It's curious how little the powers of the shakers come into the story.
Even after the pepper's power is revealed, it doesn't play a part in the
plot.  That will come up later - or rather, it won't.
