If you've flown in a jet in the past twenty years or so, you essentially
HAVE been in a fully automated plane.  Pilots aren't truly necessary to
land any longer.  They're mostly backup for the automated systems, and are
somewhat smoother at landings than the computers - or at least that used to
be true.

The time is soon approaching when humans won't be allowed to pilot during
normal conditions because the chance of human error will be greater than
the chance of automation failure.  It will come quite some time after the
risk will have flipped in truth.  Recognition always takes longer, and
people will demand the illusion of people being present and in charge.
