Yep.  In the days when monks copied manuscripts by hand, the ones that were
illiterate were considered better at the job, because they duplicated what
their eyes saw rather than thinking about the meaning... and in addition to
making fewer accidental errors, they couldn't 'correct' the text.  Very few
people could derive benefit from reading, and even fewer had literacy as a
necessary skill.

The point simply went double for women.

When it comes to society-level behavior, humans are rarely cruel, vicious,
or self-defeating for no reason.  The reasons aren't necessarily
sympathetic ones, though.
