I don't think that, in the past, illiteracy was necessarily a sign that
the person wasn't educated. Until the printing press came along,
most people didn't get the opportunity to get close to many books
or documents. Even literate people didn't have many books, and
those books were generally religious and/or philosophical works.

Some people could speak several languages, had a good knowledge
of history and politics, be able to calculate costs and profits, organise
movement of people and goods, plan the amount of food needed to
get a household through to the next year, know religious doctrine,
be able to discuss and debate current events and important ideas....
But not be literate. Because there was no need for it.
