First of all so sorry about the blank post just now I got my fingers in a 
muddle!

You sound just like me, I'm only a few years younger than ML myself (and 
born in June as well!) and also I started reading SF/F when I was about 
twelve, also starting off with Andre Norton - although there wasn't really a 
genre of "fantasy" as such in those days, (1960s) I think Andre Norton books 
were just lumped in the "junior" section in the library with all the kids 
books.

Mostly what I read at first was mainstream SF, that's all there was then 
really, but by the 1970s I discovered Anne McCaffrey and was off and 
running! Became hooked on ML as soon as I read "By The Sword" which was the 
first one of hers I ever read. It can be difficult getting her books here 
though in the UK..
