I thought the Joust Dragons were more similar to the Talyedras hawk-sibs, or 
the wolves of the Elfquest Wolfriders -- reasonably intelligent animals 
sharing a strong mental and emotional bond with their human.  As opposed to 
the Companions, or the Pern or Eragon dragons, who are arguably wiser than 
their Riders.
