slavery =/= racism.  for centuries (millennia?) slaves were taken during
war and wars were local, so the french took german slaves and the vikings
and irish took anglo-saxon slaves.  actually vikings had good voyaging
ships and took slaves from all over.

ugh pardon lack of caps.

recently reading a book set during crusades, before discovery of usa. the
main character became a slave/prisoner of war and reflected that a captured
merchant who was big and strong might be forced to do heavy labor and
remain a slave for a long time while the same merchant's captured scribe
would work near the house and might be promoted and eventually marry a free
man's daughter, gaining his own freedom.

life did not always run according to today's rules.
