I suspect that the name isn't just a random historical reference.  The
Wright brothers are beloved in American history not just because they were
the first to achieve heavier-than-air flight, but because they were
amateurs working on their own that accomplished something many more famous
people said was impossible.  The myth of American exceptionalism and
individual gumption is mainly just that - a myth - but in their case it's
actually the truth.

The possibility that it was meant as a comment on the nature of the show is
very real, especially since the name of the Enterprise was as well.  The
show doesn't slavishly copy its progenitor, but the people who made it are
clearly deeply familiar with ST trivia.  (The ship doesn't have
transporters, just shuttles, which was originally the intention for ST
until budget considerations meant they needed to save on sets.)
