Well, sure, if we're sticking to a line-by-line flip of the original, but that's what _adaptations_ are for. 

All it takes is the lady friend of the Syndonian to have been abused herself, and thus sympathetic to Thorbie, and the Syndonian's donation to Baslim would have been much more. Or maybe the lady friend herself would have given the money to the Syndonian to give to Baslim. Or maybe the Syndonian was a female who had been abused, and says as much in an undertone to Baslim.
