AIUI, one essence of "tragedy" is that it has an inevitability about it,
however well-intentioned the protagonist.  Sad endings may be tragic, in
the modern sense, without being "tragedy".

Gwynne: For me, it's usually that there's some small step, a bad decision,
and then it all starts to slide away and disaster is inevitable. And it could
have worked out fine, if only...  The tragedy is that 'if only...' If only one
person hadn't done this, or had made a different choice, or...
