Thought experiment.  It's a term used in the sciences to describe an
"experiment" which is impractical to perform for real, but where it's
sufficient to think through the logical and inevitable consequences
of the proposal to prove some point.  The term is German (perhaps
obviously), because of the physicists who came up with the concept.
Einstein was noted for them, in his work on relativity.
