[LMB] OT: Anne with an "E"

Yes. Linguistics professor Suzette Haden Elgin, of long-past memory, suggested that instead of schoolteachers stuffing "The way you speak of wrong, Wrong, WRONG!" down the throats of her Ozark-born students, they teach "Standard English as a second language" and explain why it's good to know both dialects.

Which New Mexico does for Spanish-speakers from the back hills of New Mexico, whose ancestors have lived there for 400 years. "Spanish for heritage speakers." I haven't heard of anybody in that state complaining about it.

Fine, let's play along. The whole solution of "Instruction in Language, Vocation, & Manners(tm)" offered at or proximate to the Reservation gets the whole "Teach How To Function Among White Men" fixation out of the way with a fraction of the trauma from the kidnapping/rape/beatings/etc. common to the Residential Systems (like it or not, most people can learn multiple languages). Given that the 'tainted' bloodlines cannot be erased even by enforced assimilation efforts (I'm Black, 1890 would not be pleasant for me either) this would be the best of multiple bad options.

Whoever was at fault (and I can make a very good case that the natives were
toast no matter who had discovered the Americas---if you doubt my word, go
talk to the Ainu, the Zhuang, the Taiwanese aborigines, or any of a bunch
of small tribal nationalities that had the bad luck to impinge on China or
Japan) by the time those schools were set up, it was a done deal.

Would it have been better to keep the natives on the reservations, under
the watchful eye of the Authenticity Police to keep their cultures pure?

But let's play a game. John W. Campbell came up with it. It's called "You
be Dictator."

You're now the dictator of the United States in the year 1890. You have
power equal to, or greater than, the President, Congress and the several
state legislators of our own timeline. What do you do with/to/for the
natives? As long as it doesn't involve time travel, miracles, the Alien
Space Bats descending to help out, or un-ringing bells, let's hear your
