IMHO, bad covers are covers that misrepresent the contents of the books. While those covers are mostly ugly, are they bad?

As for his assessment of himself and others... I still can't believe it's genuine. I
mean nobody could...  but apparently, yes, he can. It's a classic, really.

But, to be honest, there's a massive genre out there known as 'men who've lost
their shirts'. Some are blue or purple (aliens), some are tattooed (werewolves,
bears or bikers). So he's not the only one - he's just perhaps a bit more startling
and old-fashioned. Maybe he has a happy fandom who love his stuff?
